The Boston Globe has an ongoing page called The Big Picture, and in it they post some exquisite hi-res Hubble images. They just unveiled their 2008 Advent calender, which will consist of a new Hubble image every day during Advent. In 2002, V838 Monocerotis experienced an explosion, (the picture at the The Big Picture is a two year time lapse of this explosion), this explosion was not typical, and some fascinating ideas have been hypothesized about what is going on. The burst could have resulted from a mergeburst, the merger of two main sequence stars. A supergiant? Swallowed it’s gas giants?

I am working on  a couple of articles at the moment, so enjoy the quips for the moment.
