Aerogel, also called frozen smoke is a lightweight material that can soak up waste, such as an oil spill, in far greater quantities than other manufactured materials. A recent study showed that Aerogel could hold up to fourteen times it’s weight of a water/oil mixture.
Before Aerogel can be considered for implementation across the board, it has to be analyzed for economic feasibility.
“Aerogel was discovered in the 1930s and today is used to insulate both spacesuits, snowsuits and industrial pipelines.” (excerpt from the Scientific Americanarticle on Aerogel)
